Lots of quality to the brushwork and a hugely atmospheric piece. Late nineteenth century in date, signed to the reverse The canvas is in largely good condition with some craquelure. Vey minor paint loss. Relined and set in quality gilt frame. Frame measures 90 x 65 cm. Ready to hang Clarence Henry Roe (1850-1909) was the son of the acclaimed Victorian painter Robert Henry Roe, and part of a large family of artists. Born in Birmingham in 1850, he later moved with his family to Hampstead in London where he attended the Royal Academy. He lived in Scotland and also Yorkshire, where he became a well known figures in art circles. His paintings demonstrate great qualities , and his works were very highly regarded during his life. His landscape works included lakes, lochs, mountains, fishermen, birds and animals. Roe was a colourful character and raconteur. He suffered from personal demons including alcoholism, and died in 1909 in Menston Asylum, Yorkshire.
