Description

2 x 18th Century English County Maps by Herman Moll - Circa 1724-1750

(Will be posted from Ireland - EU)

Two detailed and highly decorative early 18th century maps of Westmorland and The County Palatine of Durham by Herman Moll, from "A New Description of England and Wales" Features archaeological and historical illustrations to the borders

It is believed that Herman Moll emigrated from Holland in the late 1680s and soon established himself as a geographer and engraver of note. Subsequently he made a move into publishing. The ‘Daily Journal’ of 31st July 1724 announced that ‘this day is published in folio ‘A New Description of England and Wales”. It contained 50 maps complete with descriptive text. It is considered his finest English work being noted for its depictions of antiquities along the margins of each map.

Condition: both very good - minor handling marks - slight chipping to some edges - minor age toning - Westmorland map has no page number and is on thin paper, this is the circa 1724 edition - Durham map is numbered 45 in top right corner (this indicates later edition after 1724 but before 1750) and is thicker paper than the other map - see all images.

Dimensions:
Westmorland - Sheet 13 3/8" wide x 8 5/8" high
Sheet - Durham - 13 7/8" wide x 8 7/8" high

Two attractive maps which will look great when framed and be an addition to any collection of 18th century maps.
