Description

Victorian Novelty Silver 'Sixpence' Vesta Case - Birmingham 1887 - Possible maker David & Lionel Spiers.

(Will be posted from Ireland - EU)

A rare vesta case with the top and bottom made up of original 1887 silver sixpences and the rest of the barrel hallmarked silver, the hallmarks on the rim are faded but what can be still seen is the Lion, Anchor and the bottom part of the date letter which appears to be "n" for 1887.
There is only information on the internet for another similar case made by David & Lionel Spiers Birmingham 1888, this is an identical case apart from the fact that the lid is separate from the barrel and the lid on the one offered for sale is hinged.

Condition: Very good - the hallmarks are rubbed and faded due to contact with the lid opening and closing - two minor marks to the back of the barrel on either side of the hinge and some tiny dings to the outer edges top and bottom  - (see images) - the hinge is firm and the lid aligns correctly to the barrel - slight patination as expected with age - see all images for condition.

Dimensions: 1 9/26" high x 3/4" diameter.

A very rare silver vesta case which is rarely seen on the open market and which will be a great addition to any vesta collection.
