Antique Wooden Penwork Folding Screen - Circa 1800's

*A decorative screen used to cover the fireplace when the fire is not lit*.

Penwork is a lavish, linear decorative technique, popular in England and Scotland from about 1780 to 1850. The images and patterns were applied with fine quill pens.

When completed, all penwork pieces were preserved with coats of costly shellac.
Through the years, these thin veneers often faded, turned orange or, becoming dry and brittle, flaked off.

Condition: Good - Scratches and fading as expected with age - all hinges firm and working smoothly - all panels firmly attached and standing straight - wood used unknown but probably a soft wood as it is not heavy - see all images.

Open - 29" high x 27 1/4" wide
Each Panel - 29" high x 6 5/8" wide x 3/8" thick

A lovely 19th century folding screen which has survived the years, one of the panels has had a "kid goat" drawn instead of the "cherubs" which are on the other three. Probably the work of a rebellious young lady bored with her task.
