Description

Antique Chinese Carved Rootwood Boat Group Circa 1880–1930 | Southern China A finely detailed antique Chinese sculpture depicting a group of figures aboard a boat, intricately carved from a single natural section of rootwood. The curved form of the vessel follows the organic contours of the wood, likely from a dense hardwood such as boxwood or camphor. The scene portrays eight figures in traditional dress, several wearing broad-brimmed hats, suggesting a leisurely or scholarly river journey. One figure rows at the prow, while others engage in quiet conversation. At the rear, carved foliage and fruit add visual balance and charm to the composition. The surface has developed a mellow patina, and the intricate carving is characteristic of the late Qing to early Republic period. Dimensions: 26 cm long × 14 cm wide × 13 cm high Material: Rootwood (likely boxwood, camphor or similar dense hardwood) Origin: Southern China Date: Circa 1880–1930 Condition: Minor age-related wear and a few small areas of old damage to the carving, consistent with age. A charming and decorative example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship, ideal for collectors of folk art or scholars’ objects.
