Early 19th Century Writing Slope in Amboyna with Inlay of Ebony, Silver and Abalone Possibly English, circa 1820–1835 A well-made early 19th-century writing slope, veneered in richly figured amboyna with a striking, tightly swirled grain. The top features a central inlaid cartouche depicting a quill and letter, worked in a combination of ebony, silver stringing, abalone, and painted detail. A further border of similar inlay surrounds the lid, with matching detail to the leading edge. The escutcheon to the front is set in silver and of diamond form. The interior opens to reveal a fitted writing slope, lined in a soft purple velvet (possibly a later replacement, though showing good age), with compartments for inkwells and writing accessories. The interior timber appears to be a light satinwood or possibly sycamore, with a fine grain and a warm golden tone. The base is lined in green baize, likely added later. Condition: Generally sound and well-preserved, with some minor losses to veneer at the corners and edges. Small areas of touch-up to the painted cartouche. The interior woodwork is clean and retains a pleasing colour. Velvet writing surface with signs of age-related wear and fraying to the central hinge. The lock is present but not tested with a key. Dimensions: 33 cm wide × 22 cm deep × 13 cm high Provenance: Purchased from an antiques dealer in Northamptonshire in the early 2000s. Reportedly part of a private collection in Yorkshire prior to that.
