Description

Victorian Oil Portrait of a Lady in Burgundy Dress, Circa 1884 A Victorian portrait of a young lady seated with a book, painted in oil on canvas. She is dressed in a burgundy gown with lace trim and a brown ribbon tie, typical of mid-19th-century fashion. The lady’s thoughtful expression and pose are characteristic of Victorian portraiture, offering a glimpse of introspection. The painting is set in a gilt wood and gesso frame, which shows some loss and damage to the moulding, consistent with age. The canvas exhibits craquelure and some flaking. The reverse of the painting features tape reading, "Oil Painting and Period Frame, Renovated, June 1967, Painting by W.W. W.....(Wilkes?) 1884." Frame measures 52 cm x 57 cm Condition: The painting shows visible craquelure and some paint flaking, and the frame has wear and damage typical for its age. These imperfections reflect the artwork’s history but do not detract from its overall appeal. The restoration in 1967 has helped preserve the piece. Provenance: Restored in 1967, with the artist's name appearing as W.W. Wilkes... on the reverse. Further provenance is not available.
