Description

Japanese Watercolour Landscape Attributed to E. Matsu (Japanese School, early 20th century) A finely rendered watercolour depicting a Japanese temple or shrine complex blanketed in snow, with ornate stone lanterns, tiled rooftops, pine trees, and two figures walking along a stepped terrace. The view looks out across a distant coastal plain and rooftops beneath a pale winter sky. Signed lower left in red, E. Matsu, likely a Japanese artist active in the early 20th century and producing export artworks for the Western market. Medium: Watercolour on paper Image size: 32 × 48 cm Frame size: 68.5 × 54.5 cm (mounted and glazed) Framer’s label: Boots Picture Framing Department, indicating UK provenance Presented in original vintage mount and glazed wooden frame. Condition: Good overall; light ageing to mount and some wear to frame consistent with age. Artwork itself clean and ready to hang. Notes on Artist & Context: Though little is documented about E. Matsu, watercolours bearing this signature occasionally surface on the market, often showing similar views of Japanese shrines, bridges, and gardens in snow. These were popular with British and European collectors during the Meiji and Taishō eras (c.1900–1930), especially among those visiting Japan or purchasing export art through dealers.
