Born in Odessa in 1876, he was the grandson of Ivan Aivazovsky and trained in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Paris. His works were exhibited internationally, and he was appointed an official artist of the Russian Naval Ministry. Hanzen later settled in Croatia, where he continued painting until his death in 1937. His works are held in museums and royal collections across Europe.
