Housed in a traditional gilt moulded frame, with minor abrasions and wear commensurate with age. This finely executed river landscape presents a peaceful Dutch canal scene beneath a broad sky filled with luminous cloud. A classic Dutch drawbridge occupies the foreground, leading the eye to a moored barge and farm buildings nestled among trees. The reflection in the still water is finely rendered, with careful attention to light and atmosphere — hallmarks of the Hague School tradition, in which Weissenbruch was trained. Son of the prominent Hague School artist H.J. Weissenbruch, Willem Johannes followed in his father's footsteps, favouring landscapes with water and subtle tonal variation. His paintings are prized for their tranquil mood, honest realism, and fluid brushwork.
