Description

Oil Portrait on Slate by Betsy Westendorp de Brias (1927–2022) Signed and dated 1981 Provenance: Private Collection, England An appealing and sensitively rendered oil on slate portrait of a young woman, titled "Ann Bell" on the reverse, and signed B. Westendorp de Brias lower right, dated 1981. The sitter is depicted in soft three-quarter profile with serene expression, dressed in a pale blue blouse against a neutral background. The choice of slate as support lends the piece a smooth, matte quality and a quietly dignified presence. To the reverse is an original printed label offering a brief biography of the artist and referencing portrait commissions for the Spanish royal family. The label includes a note about the sitter's identity, though a stated connection to King Juan Carlos appears to be incorrect and unverified. Framed under glass in a later gilt frame with linen slip. Medium: Oil on slate, glazed Dimensions (framed): Approx. 68cm high x 55cm wide About the Artist: Betsy Westendorp de Brias (1927–2022) was a Spanish-born artist who built a distinguished career in the Philippines. Celebrated for her refined floral paintings, atmospheric landscapes, and commissioned portraits of high society and royalty, she became a central figure in Filipino cultural life. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she was awarded the Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit for her contributions to art. Condition: The painting appears in good order. No visible issues to the surface; frame with minor signs of wear. Not examined out of frame.
