Description

Meiji Japanese Bronze Oil Lamp Chinese Style Dragons A.W. Burner A late 19th to early 20th century Japanese export oil lamp, made in the Chinese style. Cast in patinated bronze with gilt brass mounts, the lamp features pierced fretwork panels and applied roundels with stylised dragons in relief. The design reflects Chinese imperial motifs, popular with Western buyers during the Meiji period (1868–1912). The lamp is fitted with a brass burner stamped "Lamp Dite Electrique A.W. Bruxelles" and "Lampe Sans Suintement A.W. Déposé", indicating Belgian manufacture. The base has been drilled, likely to allow for later electrical conversion. There is a dent to one side of the font, and the original glass shade is no longer present. Origin: Japanese export, Meiji period Style: Chinese-inspired decorative metalwork Materials: Patinated bronze and gilt brass Burner: A.W. Bruxelles, Belgian-made Height: 44cm Condition: Wear consistent with age; drilled base; dent to font; shade not present A well-cast example of Meiji period export metalwork, in good display condition and retaining its period burner.
