Fine Georgian Mahogany Secretaire Chest with Satinwood Inlay English, circa 1800 A handsome and well-proportioned Georgian secretaire chest, of architectural form and made in two parts for ease of transport. The exterior in richly figured mahogany, detailed with satinwood and ebony stringing, and retaining an attractive warm colour. The upper section comprises a central cupboard flanked by striking oval satinwood panels, above a fall-front writing drawer with a neoclassical oval motif. Inside is a beautifully arranged satinwood interior with small drawers, pigeonholes, and a locking central cupboard concealing two additional secret drawers. A removable document caddy drawer is a particularly rare and practical feature. Below the writing slope are three long drawers with brass swan-neck handles and shaped escutcheons. The drawer linings are oak, with hand-cut dovetails, and the whole stands on simple square legs. The back boards are original, and the piece separates into top and bottom sections via large locating dowels. Offered in good condition, with some wear and old repairs consistent with age and use. Slight signs of an earlier gallery rail to the top. Two working keys supplied. Dimensions: Height: 178 cm Width: 98 cm Depth: 48 cm
