Description

Elegant Inlaid Satinwood Étagère, Two-Tier Table – English, c.1890 A refined and beautifully crafted satinwood two-tier étagère, dating to circa 1890, most likely of English origin, and in the Sheraton revival taste so admired in the late Victorian period. This piece displays all the hallmarks of high-quality English cabinetmaking: the oval form, satinwood veneers with delicate marquetry and stringing, and slender fluted legs with shaped brackets and an X-form stretcher centred by an oval medallion. The lower tier features a finely inlaid oval reserve with scrollwork and stylised mythical heads, reminiscent of the neoclassical motifs fashionable in the late 18th century and revived towards the end of the 19th century. Such elegant display furniture was typically produced by leading firms such as Edwards & Roberts, Maple & Co., and others active in London and the North of England. The understated symmetry and attention to detail also suggest possible influence from Gillows of Lancaster, known for their use of fine timbers and classical design elements. Dimensions: Height: 79 cm Width: 88.5 cm Depth: 55.5 cm Condition: Very good antique condition, commensurate with age. The piece is structurally sound and displays a lovely mellow patina. Some old, well-executed repairs to the frame; these do not detract from its integrity or aesthetic appeal. An elegant and decorative piece, perfect as a lamp table, occasional table, or display stand — a fine example of late 19th-century English craftsmanship.
