The expressive face, with wide, pierced eyes, open mouth, and flowing hair, evokes a classical grotesque or wind god — possibly Aeolus — or a theatrical mask inspired by ancient drama. 
The head is unusually characterful and rich in detail, and the use of high-carat gold suggests a piece of quality, likely made in Britain around 1880–1900.
