A fine antique lorgnette, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period (c. 1880-1910). 
Crafted in 12K gold-filled metal (marked 1/20 12K) with an ornate handle featuring tortoiseshell or faux tortoiseshell inlay, this elegant optical aid was a fashionable accessory among high society. 
The hinged mechanism allows the lenses to fold into the handle when not in use. 

Historical Significance: Lorgnettes, named from the French “lorgner” (to peer), were popular in the 18th-early 20th century, particularly at theatres, operas, and high-society events.
