Description

Early 20th Century Bronze Gimballed Ship’s Compass by F. Smith & Sons, Southampton A fine early 20th century English gimballed ship’s compass, made by F. Smith & Sons of Southampton. The compass features a silvered dial marked with the maker’s name and bold black and white cardinal and intercardinal points. Housed within a heavy bronze case, it is mounted in its original gimbal bracket, designed to maintain level reading at sea. The bracket retains its side rollers, indicating it was once fitted within a binnacle or similar housing. The compass measures 25 cm (10 inches) across the bracket. Condition: Good overall, with light wear, minor surface scratches and spots of verdigris consistent with maritime use and age. The compass card remains bright and legible, and the gimbal mechanism moves freely. A handsome and authentic piece of early 20th century maritime equipment, offering both decorative appeal and historical interest.
