John Rogers (American, 1829–1904) "A Frolic at the Old Homestead" — Large Painted Plaster Figural Group A finely cast and beautifully detailed painted plaster sculpture by renowned American sculptor John Rogers, depicting a cheerful domestic scene titled "A Frolic at the Old Homestead." Four figures are shown engaging in playful activity, rendered with characteristic warmth and narrative charm. The work is inscribed to the base: "A Frolic at the Old Homestead" and further impressed: "John Rogers, New York, 1881" This piece is one of Rogers’ well-known “Rogers Groups,” first modelled in 1881. The present example displays excellent detail and good surface character, with gentle, honest wear to high points consistent with age. While the date on the base is 1881, it is typical for casts to have been produced in subsequent years. Based on its quality, weight, and surface patina, this example likely dates from the late 19th century to early 20th century. The underside is later lined with baize for protection and stability. Condition: In good condition overall, with minor rubbing to the painted finish on the head of the tallest figure and to the blindfold of another, consistent with display and age. No structural damage noted.
