Description

Antique Chinese Calligraphy Brush with Natural Coral Handle and Bone Ferrule — 31 cm An antique Chinese calligraphy brush, measuring 31 cm in total length. The handle is constructed from natural, branch-form Mediterranean red coral segments, each piece individually shaped, retaining natural irregularities, growth lines, and inclusions characteristic of genuine coral. The segments are securely mounted between fine bone spacers, adding strength and decorative contrast. The ferrule is made from polished bone, featuring finely incised concentric line decoration. The bristles are of natural animal hair (most likely horsehair), soft yet full-bodied, fanning evenly with a well-formed tip. Condition: The brush is in good antique condition, with expected minor wear from use. The coral has natural surface fissures, typical of the material. The bone ferrule shows light surface marks and minor age-related patina. The bristles are intact, with some expected age-related discolouration. A fine and decorative scholar’s object, likely dating from the late Qing Dynasty (late 19th to early 20th century).
