Japanese Makie Kushi and Kanzashi Set, c.1850–1880 A fine 19th-century Japanese kushi (comb) and kanzashi (hairpin) set, dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850–1880. The kushi is gently arched and decorated in makie (gilt lacquer) with delicate foliage and floral motifs. The kanzashi is slender and elegantly shaped, echoing the comb’s design, and includes a split shank and scooped end typical of the period. Likely crafted from tortoiseshell or horn, both pieces display traditional Japanese craftsmanship and remain in good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age.
