Description

A striking and finely detailed pair of 19th century French table lamps, originally designed as classical ewers and later professionally converted for electricity. Each is cast in brass with a rich array of decoration: high-relief bacchic putti encircle the body, with deeply modelled foliate motifs to the shoulders, and elaborate grotesque dolphin-form handles in the classical manner. Mounted on later black and gilt octagonal wooden plinths, these lamps are of impressive scale and strong decorative impact. The conversion has been executed with care, retaining their sculptural quality while rendering them fully functional as table lamps. France, circa 1880 Provenance: Removed from a château in Fontainebleau. Condition: Good decorative condition with some surface patination and minor wear consistent with age. Fully wired and in working order. Supplied with modern brass harp fittings (shades not included). Dimensions (each): Height: 74 cm (29.1 in) Width: 33 cm (13 in) Depth: 25 cm (9.8 in)
