Description

Japanese Watercolour – Snow-Covered Temple by E. Matsu c.1900 A finely executed Japanese watercolour, attributed to the artist E. Matsu, depicting a snow-covered temple or shrine complex with ornamental stone lanterns and tiled rooftops. The scene is beautifully composed, with two small figures beneath parasols walking through a wintry courtyard. In the distance, a wide coastal landscape recedes into soft mist, adding depth and atmosphere to the work. Signed in red, lower left: E. Matsu – a Japanese artist known for producing watercolours for the export market in the early 20th century. Works by this hand are characterised by subtle colouring, delicate architectural detail, and an eye for tranquil composition. The watercolour is presented under glass in its original vintage frame with a mount, and retains a framer’s label from the Boots Picture Framing Department. Date: Circa 1900–1920 Origin: Japan Medium: Watercolour on paper Image size: 32 cm x 48 cm Frame size: 68.5 cm x 54.5 cm Condition: In good condition overall. The watercolour is clean and stable. Some age-related toning to the mount, and light scuffing to the frame, but all commensurate with age and display.
