Description

19th Century Meissen Porcelain Figurines – The Four Seasons A fine 19th-century set of Meissen porcelain figurines representing the Four Seasons, after mid-18th century models by Friedrich Elias Meyer. Each figure is beautifully hand-painted and stands on a scroll-moulded base with gilt accents, depicting the classical attributes of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Spring is shown as a maiden holding a garland of flowers; Summer carries a wheatsheaf and sickle; Autumn takes the form of a Bacchanalian youth with grapes and a goblet; and Winter is a bearded man cloaked in fur, warming beside a flaming urn. Each piece bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark of the Meissen factory, along with impressed model numbers and painter’s marks to the base. Dimensions: Heights range from 19 cm to 20.5 cm (7 1/2 in to 8 in) Condition: Good condition overall. Some restoration and minor losses as follows: Spring with restoration to the garland and one arm; Summer with repair to the left-hand thumb and small loss to the wheat; Autumn with restoration to the right foot and chips to the laurel; Winter in very good condition with only a small rub to the paint on one finger. No structural breaks. Colour and gilding well preserved.
