Description

Antique Regency Writing Slope – Amboyna Veneer with Inlay (c.1820–1835) A well-made early 19th-century writing slope, veneered in richly figured amboyna with decorative inlay in abalone, ebony, silver stringing and painted detail. The lid features a central motif of a quill and letter, bordered by a detailed geometric and foliate inlay band. Silver diamond-form escutcheon to the front. Opens to reveal a purple velvet-lined writing surface with compartments for inkwells and writing accessories. Interior wood likely satinwood or sycamore, with a fine golden tone. Base lined in green baize. Condition: Structurally sound and well preserved overall. Some small chips to corner veneer, wear to the velvet writing surface and a little fraying to the central hinge. Painted motif with minor restoration. Lock present but untested (no key). Measurements: 33 cm wide × 22 cm deep × 13 cm high Provenance: From a private collection in Yorkshire; acquired via a Northamptonshire antiques dealer in the early 2000s.
