Description

18th Century French Oak Coffer – Four-Panel Front A provincial French oak coffer dating from the 18th century. The front with four fielded panels, each carved with a shaped reserve enclosing a stylised flowerhead, the design further embellished with small brass studs. The panelled front is framed by moulded uprights and rails, lending the piece a balanced and symmetrical appearance typical of rural joinery of the period. The moulded three-plank top is secured with pegged joints and retains its original underside battens. It lifts to reveal a large storage compartment, the interior showing signs of historic use and old repairs to the boards. The sides are plain with chamfered edges, and the back is of panelled construction. The whole stands on integral stile feet with shaped lower edges, consistent with 18th-century provincial furniture. The oak has acquired a deep, warm colour and patination through long use, with wear, surface marks, shrinkage splits, and minor losses commensurate with age. A well-proportioned example of an 18th-century French coffer, offering both practical storage and the enduring appeal of period craftsmanship. Dimensions: Height: 62 cm Width: 175 cm Depth: 63 cm
