Fine Copeland Parian C.Delpech Bust Clytie A well-modelled 19th-century Parian porcelain bust of Clytie, after the sculptor Charles Delpech, produced by W.T. Copeland & Sons for the Art Union of London. The subject, drawn from classical mythology, represents the nymph Clytie, associated with the tale of unrequited love for the sun god Helios and her transformation into a sunflower. The bust is finely executed, with serene facial features, carefully detailed hair and softly draped clothing. It rests upon a gadrooned lower section and circular socle. The base is clearly impressed: – C. DELPECH, REDᵀ – COPELAND with date code – ART UNION OF LONDON, 1869 The impressed year refers to the date of issue by the Art Union of London. Parian busts of this type were produced in limited numbers for subscribers and were valued in the Victorian period for their marble-like appearance and fine detail. Measurements: Height: 34.5 cm Width: 24 cm Depth: 16 cm Condition: Good antique condition. Light surface marks and age-related toning. Small chip to the lower socle rim, mostly concealed beneath the overhang and not distracting on display. No repairs observed.
