Description

Louis XVI Marble-Topped Commode French, c. 1770 This Louis XVI commode from France dates to the late 18th century, offering a refined blend of neoclassical design and practical storage. The solid oak carcass is veneered with feathered satinwood and mahogany crossbanding, showcasing the period's preference for elegant simplicity and geometric lines. The grey and white marble top, likely Saint-Claude marble, is in good condition, with minor nibbles and a rough back edge, which is typical for pieces of this age. The commode features five drawers for storage: three smaller top drawers and two full-length drawers beneath, all fitted with original gilt metal handles and escutcheon plates. The commode is supported by tapered, inlaid feet, giving it a graceful, balanced appearance. The overall condition is good, with some minor signs of age, including a small section of damage to the lower middle escutcheon. The key is functional but does not lock the drawers. Condition: Marble: Good condition with minor nibbles and a rough back edge (as manufactured). Woodwork: Minor wear, including a small section of damage to the lower middle escutcheon. Hardware: Original gilt metal handles and escutcheon plates in good condition with light wear. Functionality: Key opens the middle drawer but does not lock. Dimensions: Height: 90.5 cm Width: 133 cm Depth: 62 cm
