Description

Early Victorian Set of Six Graduated Copper Haystack Measures A good and complete set of six antique English copper haystack measures, dating from the early Victorian period, circa 1830–1860. Graduated from 1 gallon down to ⅛ gill, each measure is of classic haystack form with a rolled foot, flared rim, and side handle. All are fitted with original lead verification plugs stamped to the upper lip, denoting inspection and calibration for use in trade. The set comprises: 1 Gallon 1 Pint ½ Pint 1 Gill ½ Gill ⅛ Gill Heights: Ranging from approximately 10 cm (⅛ gill) to 29 cm (1 gallon). Condition is sound and consistent with age. The copper has taken on a rich pinkish tone with good surface patina. Expected small dents, marks and signs of use throughout; some old repairs are visible but stable and unobtrusive. Natural verdigris remains visible at the seams and base of the largest measure.
