London: John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1869. “A New Edition”. Present are 9 volumes only: Vols. I, II, IV, V, VI, VIII, X, XI, XII. Lacking Vols. III, VII and IX. Octavo, approx. 13 × 18.5 cm. Bound in the publisher’s original red-brown cloth, gilt titles to the spines, blind-stamped boards. Volume I with engraved portrait frontispiece of Grote (with printed facsimile signature, not manuscript). Provenance: various inscriptions and bookplates, including that of Richard Augustus Grebe. Some pasted slips with ownership names also appear. Condition: a working, incomplete set. Bindings rubbed and marked, with fraying to spine ends and corners, a few small splits to cloth. Text with foxing, age spots, some staining, and areas of damp marking. Occasional inscriptions to endpapers. Some hinges strained but all volumes holding. There is a musky odour from storage. Dimensions: 13 × 18.5 cm. An incomplete but presentable run in original cloth, offered as seen.
