Description
Antique 12K Gold-Filled Lorgnette Glasses – Victorian / Edwardian Era
A fine antique lorgnette, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period (c. 1880-1910). Crafted in 12K gold-filled metal (marked 1/20 12K) with an ornate handle featuring tortoiseshell or faux tortoiseshell inlay, this elegant optical aid was a fashionable accessory among high society. The hinged mechanism allows the lenses to fold into the handle when not in use.
Historical Significance:
Lorgnettes, named from the French “lorgner” (to peer), were popular in the 18th-early 20th century, particularly at theatres, operas, and high-society events. Unlike traditional spectacles, they were designed as a statement of refinement and sophistication, often worn on chatelaines or as part of jewellery ensembles. By the early 20th century, their popularity declined as modern eyewear evolved, making surviving examples highly collectible.
A charming and functional antique, perfect for collectors of optical history, vintage fashion, or Victorian accessories.
