Description

Victorian Wooden Yarn Swift / Wool Winder on Stand, c.1850 A fine mid-19th century umbrella swift or wool winder, dating to around 1850. Fruitwood with a mellow honeyed patina, the swift is mounted on a circular stepped base with brass fittings and bun feet. The top is surmounted by a finely turned finial, above scissor-action arms tied with ribbons, designed to expand and hold skeins of yarn for winding. Free-standing examples of this size and quality are less commonly found than clamp-mounted versions, making this both a decorative and functional piece of Victorian sewing equipment. Height: 67.5 cm Base diameter: 20 cm Good antique condition, with surface wear and small marks consistent with age and use.
