Description

Pair of 19th Century French Ormolu Table Lamps with Lion Masks – c.1890 A decorative and well-cast pair of late 19th century French ormolu table lamps, dating to around 1890. The pierced openwork bodies are richly ornamented with scrolling foliage and classical motifs, each mounted with bold lion-mask handles grasping laurel wreath rings. The lamps stand on shaped circular bases with finely detailed animal-form feet, in the manner of neoclassical tripod supports. The gilt bronze retains a mellow patina with traces of verdigris in the recesses, emphasising the depth of the casting and adding character. Heavy and well-made, they were almost certainly conceived as decorative vases or garniture in the late 19th century, later adapted to electricity in the early 20th century. Fitted with recent bespoke green fabric shades with braid and fringe, chosen to complement the warmth of the gilt finish. Dimensions (including shades): Height: 61.5 cm (24.2 in) Diameter: 36 cm (14.2 in) Condition: Good decorative condition. Wear and rubbing to gilding with oxidation to the crevices, consistent with age and enhancing the antique character. Professionally rewired with vintage-style flex, though not tested here.
