19th Century Souvenir - Mary Queen of Scots Signet Ring from the Collection of the late Earl of Buchan- Rock Crystal Desk Seal - Circa 1843

The Desk Seal has a turned wooden handle which when held to the light shows the profile of Sir Walter Scott.

The original ring owned by the well-known Scottish antiquary the earl of Buchan, was exhibited at Holyrood Palace in 1843 and these facsimiles were sold as souvenir rings and desk seals.

Made of rock crystal in 1843 in the form of a Desk Seal, boxed and with a piece of sealing wax to show the seal.

Green label: "Queen Mary's Signet Ring from the collection of the late Earl of Buchan"

The seal has the initials M R together with the arms of England, France, Scotland and Ireland.

Instruction label: "By holding the handle of the Seal between the Spectator and the light, a correct profile of Sir Walter Scott is readily discovered"

Condition: the seal is in excellent condition, with no damage but shows minute traces of red wax - the box has a black covering with a green label and instructions on the inner lid - the box and lid are firm with expected age related wear - wax seal from the actual item attached to inner lid - this could well be a Sir Walter Scott memorial souvenir which would account for the black box and the label being on the inner lid - see all images.

Seal - 3" long x 3/4" wide at top x 1" wide at widest x 5/16" square at Seal

Box - 3 1/4" wide x 1 1/4" wide

A rare item still usable and of interest to Mary Queen of Scots and Sir Walter Scott collectors.
