Middle Eastern Marquetry Box – Beirut, 1945 A finely crafted wooden box with intricate geometric marquetry, likely made in Syria or Lebanon. The inlay includes small panels of mother-of-pearl or bone, set within a variety of coloured woods in traditional mosaic patterns. The box is inscribed to the inside of the lid "Beirut. 5.9.45", suggesting it was brought back as a souvenir in the immediate post-war period. Some wear commensurate with age, particularly to the edges and hinges, but overall the decoration remains intact and well preserved. The base appears to be softwood, with signs of age and use.
