Description

Hand-Carved Wooden Elephant with Bone Inlay, c. Mid-20th Century A characterful carved wooden elephant, likely made in India or East Africa, dating to around the mid-20th century. The figure is carved from a dense, dark-stained hardwood, possibly ebony or a similarly heavy timber, with inlaid details to the tusks, eyes, and toenails – likely bone, though untested. The carving has a striking, stylised quality, with simplified lines and gently rounded forms. The surface shows notable wear, with age-related scuffs, cracks to the grain, and a chip to the end of the trunk. One eye appears to be missing its inlay. The piece has clear age and a degree of charm despite its imperfections. Dimensions: approx. 21 cm high x 21 cm long x 8 cm wide An appealing decorative object with a strong silhouette, showing honest signs of age and use.
