George III Sheraton Satinwood Writing Table Early 19th Century, English A fine and beautifully crafted satinwood writing table in the Sheraton style, dating from the early 1800s. The rectangular top is veneered in vivid satinwood, bordered with contrasting mahogany crossbanding and detailed ebony stringing. To the rear is a pull-up silk panel screen providing privacy when in use — a feature typical of refined Georgian furniture. The front apron houses a central frieze drawer with an elegant diamond-shaped ebony escutcheon. Internally, the drawer is compartmentalised with sections for papers, a sliding pen tray, and an ink pot recess, suggesting this table was designed for serious writing or correspondence. To the right side, a cleverly concealed baize-lined writing slide extends, offering additional workspace. The opposing sides bear matching dummy drawers, contributing to the symmetry and sophistication of the design. Raised on slender, tapering legs with geometric ebony stringing, and finished with brass caps and original castors. The table is finely worked to all sides, allowing it to stand freely and proudly in the centre of a room. Provenance: Removed from an Elizabethan stately home in Worcestershire.
