Description
A round copper plaque of good quality, featuring a finely modelled relief scene of a bear in a rugged alpine setting.
The composition includes a mountainous backdrop, stylised pine trees, a windswept tree in blossom, and a bird in flight — all rendered with confident detail and a strong sense of movement.
The bear is shown standing over its prey in a dynamic and naturalistic pose, the whole with a distinctly continental character.
The plaque is signed with a monogram to the lower right, reading AK MS, and is likely of German or Austro-Hungarian origin, with stylistic nods to the Black Forest tradition and early Jugendstil influences.
Such pieces were popular in late 19th to early 20th century decorative arts, often used to evoke the romanticism of the wilderness and alpine hunting culture.
The reverse retains its original leaded mount, with evidence of age and use consistent with a period example.
The copper displays a rich, aged patina throughout.
Diameter: 20 cm
Material: Copper
Condition: Good overall, with minor surface marks and wear in keeping with age.
Slight irregularities and oxidation to the reverse.
