Description
A fine Sons of Temperance Cadets of Temperance medal, awarded in 1934 to Bertha Warren Allcock for her service and dedication to the temperance movement.
Obverse: The enameled badge is inscribed "Cadets of Temperance", signifying the recipient’s membership in the youth division of the Sons of Temperance, a fraternal organisation that promoted total abstinence from alcohol.
The outer red enamel band reads "Sons of Temperance – For Services Rendered", denoting that this was an award for outstanding contribution. At the top of the medal is a white six-pointed star with “PWA” (Past Worthy Archon), indicating the recipient once held a leadership role.
The badge is gilded with white and blue enamel detailing.
Reverse: Beautifully engraved with the name "Bertha Warren Allcock" and the year "1934".
Maker’s mark “H&S”, likely for a British or American medal manufacturer.
Suspension & Ribbon: The medal is suspended from a decorative gilt pin bar inscribed "P.W. ARCHON", referencing the title Past Worthy Archon, a leadership position within the order.
The ribbon is red and white, representing the temperance values of purity and abstinence.
Some fraying and minor wear to the ribbon, consistent with age.
Historical Context: The Sons of Temperance was a 19th and 20th-century fraternal organisation that promoted total abstinence from alcohol and supported members in times of need.
The Cadets of Temperance was its youth division, aimed at educating and guiding young members towards a sober lifestyle.
The Past Worthy Archon (PWA) was a high-ranking title given to individuals who had served as leaders within the group.
Condition:
Medal: Good condition with minimal wear, some enamel loss.
Ribbon: Shows signs of fraying, but remains intact.
Engraving: Crisp and legible.
