Description

Pair of 18th Century Delft Plates – Chinoiserie & Floral Designs Origin: Delft, Netherlands | Period: 18th Century | Material: Tin-glazed earthenware (Delftware) Description: This exceptional pair of 18th-century Delft plates exemplifies the masterful craftsmanship for which Delftware is renowned. The hand-painted designs are an exquisite blend of European and Eastern influences, with one plate showcasing a chinoiserie motif and the other a refined European floral pattern. Chinoiserie Plate (Plate 1) The chinoiserie plate features a vibrant scene of a Chinese figure holding a flag, beside a vase adorned with stylized flowers. Surrounded by delicate floral and architectural elements, this plate beautifully captures the 18th-century European fascination with Chinese art and porcelain. Dimensions: 25.5 cm (approx. 10 inches) in diameter. Floral Plate (Plate 2) The floral plate features a central bouquet of stylized flowers, including a sunflower, with trailing vines and other floral motifs. This piece reflects the refined European floral aesthetic, which was a hallmark of Delftware’s decorative style during the period. Dimensions: 23 cm (approx. 9 inches) in diameter. Condition: Both plates are in very good condition, with well-preserved hand-painted designs. There is minor wear consistent with age, including small nibbles and chips along the edges, which only add to their charm and authenticity. The plates retain their vibrancy and are a fine example of 18th-century Delftware. Provenance: These plates were made in Delft, Netherlands, a city renowned for its high-quality ceramic production from the 16th century onwards. The chinoiserie design reflects the European fascination with the Far East, while the floral pattern speaks to the traditional European tastes that were prominent in Delftware production during the 18th century.
