Japanese Kushi and Kanzashi Hair Ornament Set, Edo Period, c.1860–1870 A 19th-century Japanese kushi (comb) and kanzashi (hairpin) set, dating to the late Edo period, circa 1860–1870. The kushi is of shallowly curved form, decorated in gilt lacquer (makie) with stylised floral and foliage motifs. The accompanying kanzashi is of two-pronged form, with matching lacquered decoration to the upper section. The material appears to be lacquered horn or tortoiseshell in appearance, though not tested. Both pieces show expected signs of age and minor surface wear, but remain well-presented with a good degree of original detail preserved. Comb width: approx. 9.5 cm Hairpin length: approx. 15 cm A refined example of traditional Japanese hair ornamentation from the closing years of the Edo period.
