Description

Japanese Moriage Dragonware Tea Set with Arhats – c.1950, Original Case A decorative mid-20th century Japanese tea set in the Satsuma export style, dating to circa 1950. The earthenware pieces are enamelled in polychrome and gilt, with raised moriage detailing and dragon motifs in relief. The design features haloed figures of Arhats (Buddhist disciples) in richly decorated robes, framed by swirling dragons and stylised waves. The set comprises 15 pieces: Teapot with dragon spout and figural lid Covered milk jug and sugar bowl Five teacups with associated saucers Two small lidded vessels (likely for tea or waste) Each item is marked to the base in red and gold characters. Presented in its original black faux crocodile case, lined in red silk and blue velvet, with individual compartments for each piece. Case dimensions: 55 x 32 x 15 cm Condition: In good condition overall. No visible chips or cracks. Some rubbing to the gilding in places. The fitted case with surface wear in keeping with age. A complete and eye-catching example of post-war Japanese decorative ware.
