Description

Pair of Mid-19th Century Carved Crystal Mirrored Plaques A fine pair of Carved Crystal Mirrored Plaques, featuring intricately carved profiles of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, each mounted on scarlet velvet with mirrored backs. These pieces exemplify the High Victorian style, showcasing the luxurious materials and detailed craftsmanship of the period. Each plaque measures 32 x 47 cm (12 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches), and both are in very good condition, with some visible old adhesive through the carved crystal silhouettes, a testament to their authenticity and age. These plaques remain fully original, with no major alterations to the materials or structure. Provenance and Historical Context: These plaques are a notable example of Victorian-era commemorative art, reflecting the era's admiration for royal figures and their iconography. The use of crystal carving and mirrored backgrounds, paired with velvet framing, is characteristic of the decorative style favored during the High Victorian period. Condition: Both plaques are in very good condition for their age. There is visible old glue through the carved crystal, which does not detract from the overall integrity of the pieces. The velvet backing shows light signs of wear but remains intact, and the mirrors retain their original reflective surfaces. This pair of royal portrait plaques would make an elegant addition to any collection of Victorian memorabilia or royal memorabilia, offering both historical significance and aesthetic appeal.
