Description

Early 19th Century Marble Sculpture of Venus on Fluted Mahogany Pedestal We are pleased to offer an exquisite early 19th-century marble sculpture of Venus, masterfully carved from white marble and mounted on its original fluted column mahogany pedestal. The sculpture beautifully depicts Venus, the goddess of love, in a classical, idealized form, standing gracefully on a shell with flowing hair, evoking the timeless beauty of classical mythology. Dimensions: Figure Height: 52 cm Total Height: 158 cm Width: 48 cm Depth: 26 cm This remarkable piece is an excellent example of Neoclassical sculpture from the early 19th century, reflecting the period's fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity. The graceful proportions and smooth finish of the marble highlight the artist’s skill, while the pose of Venus is inspired by classical representations, most famously seen in Botticelli's The Birth of Venus. The sculpture is in good condition for its age, with some discolouration to the marble, a small missing finger on the right hand, and minor scratches to the pedestal, all of which are consistent with age and handling. The mahogany pedestal features a classic fluted column design and remains in strong, stable condition. This stunning piece would be an elegant addition to any Neoclassical collection, offering both historical significance and aesthetic beauty to any interior.
