Rectangular Chinese export lacquer pen or writing box, dating from the late 19th century (C. 1870–1900).
The exterior is finished in black lacquer and decorated with a gilt chinoiserie scene depicting figures in a garden landscape with pavilions, trees and water, produced for the Western market.
The hinged lid opens to a fitted interior with compartments intended for dip pens and writing accessories, consistent with Victorian-period Western use.
The decoration and form are typical of late Qing export lacquerware.
