Roman Sestertius of Emperor Trajan (AD 98–117) Diameter: 33mm | Weight: 21.7g An impressive large bronze sestertius of Emperor Trajan, struck during the early second century AD. The obverse features a laureate bust of Trajan facing right, with traces of the imperial legend still discernible around the perimeter. Careful examination reveals partial lettering consistent with the standard imperial inscription: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM, characteristic of Trajan’s coinage. The portrait, though worn, retains the robust, square-jawed features typical of Trajan’s effigy. The reverse depicts a standing draped figure, most likely Victory or Roma, holding a sceptre — a frequent motif under Trajan, symbolising imperial authority and military success. The letters S C (Senatus Consulto) remain faintly visible, confirming the coin’s issue under senatorial authority. The coin exhibits significant surface wear and corrosion from long burial, with areas of stable green patination and reddish-brown oxidation. Despite this, it retains considerable historic presence and weight, standing as a substantial piece of Roman numismatic history.
